Endocannabiniod System

Medical Cannabis works by interacting with a complex system in the human body called the Endocannabinoid System.

The Endocannabinoid System or ECS helps our bodies regulate pain, mood, appetite, mobility in the gut, memory, emotions, stress response, immune function and more.

Cannabinoids are active compounds found in medical cannabis which have effects in the body. The body produces substances that stimulate cannabinoid receptors.

Cannabinoid Receptors

THC Tetra-hydro-cannabinol

THC Tetra-hydro-cannabinol

Cannabinoid receptors are located in the brain, muscles, fat, and digestive tract. When a patient ingests the plant-based cannabinoids in medical cannabis such as THC or CBD which are similar molecular shapes to endocannabinoids, they fit in the same receptors and trigger reactions in specific  neurotransmitters.

THC is the psychoactive component that causes the patients to feel high when they consume medical cannabis, but it offers useful medical benefits such as pain relief.

CBD Cannabidiol

Each strain of cannabis has a specific THC to CBD ratio and successful treatments means getting this ratio right for the individual patient. The functioning or lack of functioning of the ECS might have an important relationship to the pathology of chronic conditions and could be tied to the efficacy of cannabis.

Medical Cannabis Products

  •  Edibles can be defined as any food that contains cannabis. These products have longer onsets and tend to cause powerful full-body, psychoactive effects.
  •  Inhalation is the fastest method of delivery to the patient. When a patient inhales medical marijuana, the majority of cannabinoids enter the body through the lungs where they are passed along directly into the consumer’s blood stream. The effect is almost instantaneous.
  • Oral delivery includes all techniques that are administered through the mouth, including tinctures, ingestible oils, and infused food/drinks.
  • Topical cannabis administration utilizes full cannabis extract — a thick oil that has been decarboxylated to activate cannabinoids. Once cannabinoids are activated, they can be absorbed through your skin.
  •  Vaporizers are the logical choice for moderate to experienced and/or health-conscious cannabis consumers. A vaporizer steadily heats herbs to a temperature that is high enough to extract THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids.
